Despite becoming Chair of the OB/GYN Department and developing a fully functional Ethics Committee at the hospital where he maintained the busiest obstetrical and surgical schedule in the department, it soon became very clear that the politics of the hospital and the perspectives of the older physicians were not in alignment with Biter’s strong beliefs about birth, compassionate care for the dying and quality care for the underserved. This realization led to the development of Babies by the Sea Birthing Centers with a unique business model that creates a new approach to out of hospital births with cost savings for patients and insurance companies while creating financial viability for providers and investors. In combination with Seaside Giving, this paradigm shift is being reproduced around the world to create a change in how birth is honored for all women of all backgrounds.
Ever since a young age, Biter has been inspired with people whose lives were spent making a difference for a cause, protecting the vulnerable or challenging injustice. During his OB/GYN residency, he co-founded a nonprofit to grant adult women their last wishes as a means to encourage people to live until the moment they die and allow doctors to offer an alternative to additional futile treatment efforts when appropriate. His greatest accomplishment in the nonprofit sector, however, remains the founding of Seaside Giving, an international program that not only enables women with less resources to achieve a transformative birth, but also encourages them to harness that power to “pay it forward” with a service project in their communities. To quote Biter, “We create ripples of effects beyond ourselves. Pay attention to what you do.”
During his earliest days at Juniata College, Rob was challenged to express his emotions and life lessons through portraying characters very different from himself in the theatre department. It was this experience that first encouraged him to write about the many lessons gleaned from a career of interacting with patients and their families from all walks of life and during moments of great intensity. His empathy can be seen in the many published articles, book chapters, poetry and award winning play, Strangers. As a public speaker, the passion of his beliefs in the importance of rights of women, the power of birth and the importance of loving end of life care becomes clear whether in a group of ten or the thousands.
Having become a doctor at the very same medical center where his father died from a curable cancer at the age of 40, Dr. Biter developed a unique perspective surrounding birth and death, the importance of patients’ rights and the role of a physician as a human healer. Despite numerous awards for his academic achievements throughout his entire educational career, he considers his greatest accomplishments have been when he made a patient feel comforted at the end of her life, when he assisted a woman to realize her power in birth and when an all grown up baby recounts the story of her birth with appreciation.
"“Out of the utter sadness and despair came the blessing of finding the most amazing OB. I cannot thank Dr Robert Biter enough for giving me hope, compassion and empathy on the darkest day of my life and for being there on the happiest days of my life when our babies came into the world.”"
"“To me he is a very special doctor. I am from Oregon and met Dr. Biter when he helped our granddaughter give birth in San Diego. When I needed surgery, I knew that I wanted him to be my doctor, too. Dr. Biter was kind enough to perform surgery after carefully explaining exactly what he was going to do. I no longer have the problems that I did. It was worth the long trip. He was a blessing and a very great doctor.”"
"“I had read many of Dr. Robert Biter’s writings and knew that he had a beautiful way of describing his experiences as a caring doctor. His insights and respect for the people who entrusted their care to him were obvious. When he spoke at our conference, however, I wasn’t prepared for the power of his public speaking skills. I wasn’t the only one in tears listening to him talk. So powerful.”"
